Brown / Biodiverse Roofs

Brown / Biodiverse Roofs

In most cases, these roofs are either left alone to allow the germination of wind-blown seeds, or alternatively, seeds collected from the local area are scattered over the roof area. Over time an ecosystem of plants and animals will develop on the roof. This is seen as a way of partially mitigating the loss of such ecosystems from existing brownfieLd sites that have been redeveloped.
Brown roofs share many similarites with green roofs, the main difference being that the growing medium (usually locally sourced rubble, gravel, soil, recycled bricks, local vegetation etc.) is carefuLLy selected to meet a specific biodiversity requirement.
